The Overview page shows the state of your budget at a glance: what you have to budget, what is left in the categories you care about, what is coming up, and what needs your attention. Open it from Overview in the sidebar. To open Zerosum straight to it, make it your home page in Settings. On mobile, add it to your tab bar from Mobile tab bar in Settings, or open it from the More menu.

The page always shows the current month, using your budget's own calendar.

What needs attention

When something needs doing, a bar under the page title lists it, one chip per area:

  • To review: imported and scheduled transactions waiting for approval or a category. The chip opens them in your accounts.

  • Overspent: categories that spent more than they have available this month.

  • Underbudgeted: categories that need money this month: overspending, goals that are not on track, or upcoming bills the available money won't cover.

The category chips open the budget with the matching filter on, so the categories you see are the ones the chip counted. The bar disappears when nothing needs attention.

The widgets

The rest of the page is a grid of widgets. A new Overview starts with these, in this order:

  • Snapshot: Ready to Budget, what you spent this month, your net worth, and how many goals are on track.

  • Plan Ahead: how much of next month is already covered. It uses the same numbers as Next Month Coverage in the side panel.

  • Spending Breakdown: this month's spending so far, by category group or by category.

  • Recent Cash Flow: money in against money out for the last six months, with your average monthly net.

  • Category Watch: what is left in your favorite categories.

  • Transactions to Review: imported and scheduled transactions waiting for approval or a category. Tap one to open it.

  • Upcoming: scheduled transactions and the next repeats of your recurring series.

  • Goals Needing Attention: goals that need money budgeted this month to stay on track. Tap a goal for its details and to budget what it needs.

You can also add an Accounts widget and any of the charts and stats from Analytics.

Snapshot

Spent This Month compares what you have spent so far with last month. By default it compares with the same part of last month: on the 10th, with the 1st to the 10th of last month, and once a month is over, with the whole of last month. This keeps the first days of a month from always looking like a big drop.

To compare with the whole of last month instead, open the widget's menu, choose Settings, and set Compare spending with to All of last month. The line under the amount says which comparison it uses. In the same settings you choose which of the four tiles to show.

Category Watch

Category Watch lists your favorite categories the way the budget page shows them: the same Available colors, progress bars and status lines, in budget order. Tap a category to open it in the budget. The header counts favorites that are overspent.

To choose what appears, star or unstar categories in the budget. With no favorites, the widget explains how to add some.

Upcoming

Upcoming lists your scheduled transactions at any date, plus the next repeats of your recurring series as far ahead as your forecast setting allows. That setting is the same one the account register uses; see Scheduled & recurring transactions.

  • Out and In: what the listed transactions move out of and into your budget. Transfers between your own budget accounts and credit cards don't count, since that money stays in your budget.

  • Not covered: a bill due this month whose category can't cover what is still scheduled in it gets a line naming the category and how much it is short this month. The header shows how many categories are short, whatever the forecast window.

Bills in later months are not marked: they are paid from a month you have not budgeted yet. Uncategorized bills are not marked either, since there is no category to budget into.

Accounts

Accounts lists your cash accounts and credit cards with their balances, grouped and ordered like the Accounts page, with a total for each group. Under each credit card, a line says where its payment stands, in the same terms as its payment category in the budget:

  • Payment covered: the payment category holds enough to pay the card in full.

  • Payment goal funded: a card you pay down with a goal has this month's payment budgeted.

  • Left to budget for this month's payment: how much the card's goal still needs this month.

  • Short for what is scheduled: a scheduled card payment the category can't cover yet.

  • Left to fully cover this card: how much more the payment category needs to pay off the balance.

  • Paid more than budgeted: you sent more to the card than its payment category held.

A card with nothing owed and nothing to flag shows no line. See Credit Card Accounts for how payment categories work.

Customizing the page

  • Add Widget: pick from the Overview widgets and the analytics charts and stats. A widget that can appear only once is marked when it is already on the page. The page holds up to 30 widgets.

  • Arrange: reorder every widget at once.

  • Widget menu: each widget's menu has Move earlier, Move later, Settings (rename it, and set its options where it has any) and Remove.

  • Reset Layout: appears once you change the layout. It restores the default page after you confirm, and removes the widgets you added, renamed or configured.

Widget widths are fixed by type: the Snapshot and Plan Ahead span the full width, and most other widgets take one column. Your layout is saved for each budget and follows your account across devices.

Analytics widgets on the Overview have no date range bar. Monthly figures use the current month, flow charts the last six months, and most other charts the last twelve months.
