API

I use the YNAB API to pull in current category balances for a couple of spreadsheets I use for various projections. It would be awfully nice not to lose that ability if I switch over. Migrated from UserJot · originally requested Jun 2026 · 18 votes.

I’m currently developing a pre-retirement software and I would consume ZS APIs to update account balances, average spending /mo to auto populate entries.

I am happy to beta test this. Let me explain my use-case. I am coming from YNAB ( thanks for the 21 days trial btw ).

Since YNAB never had bank sync for where I live ( same as zero ), I built a simple cloudflare worker that receives emails and parses the content then add as a transaction to my budget.

With LLMs, it is even better for categories and others.

Essentially, I just set auto forwarding rules against my bank’s emails and I’d love them to auto show up in Zero

One thing that would be helpful with Zerosum’s API is if getting a payee or all payees also returned all the name matching rules or if there was an API GET endpoint to send a payee name such as “KROGER #90210” and see if it returns a matching payee ID / name for “Kroger” based on the rules. This way when a transaction is created via API, the Payee ID could be specified instead of sending the merchant name. YNAB’s API doesn’t have either of these capabilities.

Use Case: I have some generic payees like “Food Truck” where I let them get imported from a credit card email as merchant “PP*Holy Guacamole“ and assign them to a Food Truck payee. In the YNAB UI you can’t search by the imported payee name, so I also have the API transaction post including the merchant name in the Memo field. I often delete it from the Memo field when it does match. Same goes with payees for Airport Food, Parking, Gift Shop, Ice Cream, etc.

Hoping for a more sophisticated way to do this with Zerosum’s future API.

I’d get great use of this, as currently we use the YNAB api to pull category balances, which are then used to work out how much money should be in each account (for CC payments, savings etc). Really like zerosum but is a shame to be missing out on this for the moment

Hi @Pedro When you’re ready to build the API, if you have a way and want some users to help beta test, I’d be happy to help with that!

I have an app that gets/creates transactions and updates transactions (clears) which works with YNAB today and can easily be copied to work with Zerosum.
